The owner of Jet Set, the Dominican Republic nightclub where a fatal roof collapse killed 236 people in April, has been arrested.

According to prosecutors, Antonio Espaillat has been charged with involuntary homicide, and was arrested along with his sister, Maribel Espaillat.

The arrest follows new evidence against Antonio Espaillat from a club employee, who told authorities that he had warned the club’s owners of his concerns around the roof’s safety ahead of the fatal event, urging them to cancel the concert.

The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday, April 8, during a concert at the popular Santa Domingo club. Hundreds were gathered inside watching a performance from merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who died in the incident.

Espaillat later explained that the ceiling was made of plaster tiles, which often fell from the roof due to filtration issues, but were repeatedly fixed over the years.

236 people were killed in the incident, and a further 180 were injured.

Espaillat appeared in front of the attorney general’s office in Santo Domingo yesterday, where he was questioned and ultimately detained, according to his lawyer, Jorge Luis Polanco. His sister, who helped to run the venue, was also arrested and charged.

A statement from the attorney general’s office claimed that both siblings had attempted to “manipulate” or “intimidate” potential witnesses who worked at the club.

“[Antonio and Maribel] demonstrated immense irresponsibility and negligence by failing to do what was necessary to ensure that the Jet Set Club’s roof was adequately and expertly repaired,” the statement reads.

Weeks after the incident, Espaillat apologized to the families of the victims, saying that he would “face everything.” He explained: “I’m not going anywhere. To the families of the victims, I want to say I’m sorry. I’m very sorry. I am completely destroyed.”
