Glastonbury attendees urged to get MMR jab following measles warning

Festivalgoers have been encouraged to receive a measles mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination before attending this years Glastonbury, as experts have raised concerns about a possible measles outbreak.

According to ITV News, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has indicated that several "highly infectious illnesses" are currently spreading in the South West of England and London.

The UK government published a warning last week (June 5) regarding a measles outbreak in the UK as people prepare for summer holidays; UKHSA data showed that there were 86 cases of measles in the UK in May and 109 cases in April.

London has reported the highest number of cases this year, accounting for 39% of 420 confirmed measles cases since January 1.

As hundreds of thousands of attendees get ready to gather in Somerset in two weeks, the agency has cautioned that festivals create an ideal environment for the spread of measles, sexually transmitted diseases (STIs), and more.

“We want festivalgoers to enjoy their time at Glastonbury and other festivals this year," stated UKHSA South Wests Health Protection consultant Dr. Alasdair Wood. "Being aware of the current health risks will help those attending enjoy their time as much as possible.”

“Measles is circulating across the country, and festivals are the perfect place for measles to spread. If you’re not fully vaccinated against measles, mumps, and rubella, please contact your GP to see if you can get an appointment before coming to the festival," he added. “If you feel unwell or have been advised to isolate due to measles or another infection, please continue to do so."

According to the NHS, measles typically begins with "cold-like symptoms" such as a high temperature, a runny or blocked nose, sneezing, a cough, and red or sore eyes — a rash often appears a few days after the onset, starting with the ears. Some individuals report "white spots" inside the cheeks and on the back of the lips.

Measles spreads through breathing, coughing, and sneezing, so it is advisable for anyone experiencing cold-like symptoms to wash their hands frequently with soap and water, use tissues when coughing or sneezing, and dispose of tissues immediately.

While immunization is the best way to prevent infection, the MMR vaccine can be administered at any age. It is recommended that individuals who did not receive an MMR vaccine as children contact their GP to arrange for a vaccination.

People born between 1970 and 1990 are particularly urged to consult a doctor, as this age group may not have received doses to protect against all three infections.
