BBC says it "will not ban" Kneecap from Glastonbury 2025 broadcast

The BBC has confirmed that it "will not ban" Kneecap from its Glastonbury 2025 broadcast, despite calls from MPs to prevent the Irish rap trio from performing at this years festival.

Earlier this week, Glastonbury announced that Kneecap would be taking the stage at the West Holts area, which is one of the festivals curated stages that the BBC broadcasts live during the festival weekend, alongside the Other Stage, the Park Stage, the Pyramid Stage, and more.

This confirmation follows weeks of pressure from MPs to remove the trio from the Glastonbury 2025 line-up due to backlash over two resurfaced clips of the band performing in 2023 and 2024. One clip reportedly shows a member of the band shouting: "Kill your local MP."

The second clip allegedly features Kneecaps Mo Chara waving a Hezbollah flag on stage in London, which led to the rapper being charged under the Terrorism Act by the Metropolitan Police. The artist, whose real name is Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on June 18.

In a statement to The i Paper, the broadcaster mentioned that it "doesnt ban artists," but will "ensure that our programming will meet our editorial guidelines. Decisions about our broadcast output will be made in the lead-up to the festival."

According to NME, the BBCs guidelines prohibit “unjustifiably offensive language” and typically avoid political statements to maintain balance. Therefore, while the performance may be broadcast live in full, it could be edited before being uploaded to iPlayer or come with an additional warning.

Despite various political figures calling for Kneecaps removal from festival line-ups this summer, the band has only been prevented from performing at Scotlands TRSNMT Festival due to "police concerns," while they successfully held their scheduled headline slot at Londons Wide Awake Festival last month.

Kneecap has recently announced their largest show outside of Ireland, with the trio set to perform at Londons OVO Arena on September 18.
