David Lynch’s possessions, including music gear, put up for auction

A collection of David Lynch’s personal items has been put up for sale via Juliens Auctions and Turner Classic Movies (TCM).

The auction comprises 441 lots, ranging across music equipment, film memorabilia, art supplies from his home studio, and other personal items, and takes place in Gardena, California, on June 18, alongside online bidding.

The auctions include his 1997 Parker Fly electric guitar, which he described his love for in his 2013 documentary on the making of The Big Dream, saying: “I started playing guitar only because one was there, and I wanted to see what sound effects I could make on it. But in making sound effects with the guitar, a deep thrill went into me, down into my soul. I loved working that thing.”

Other music equipment featured is a Danny Ferrington custom five-neck guitar, a personal collection of albums related to Blue Velvet, a 10-piece drum kit, a Casio keyboard, a Fender Rhodes keyboard, Yamaha and Korg synths, and various FX pedals.

Other notable items include a red curtain and black and white zig-zag rug in the style of Twin Peaks’ Black Lodge, a personalised director’s chair, a 35mm print of his debut film Eraserhead, and several coffee machines and mugs.

“These historical and cherished pieces reflecting David Lynch’s singular artistic vision, as well as his passions and pursuits ranging from his director’s chair, espresso machine to his guitar, record collections and Twin Peaks style decor, come directly from the home of the visionary artist whose enigmatic films stirred our most imaginative and collective surreal dreams,” says Catherine Williamson of Juliens Auctions.

Lynch died on January 16 this year aged 78 and is beloved for the surrealist vision he brought to his projects.
