New study reveals 84% decline in number of nightclubs in Ireland since 2000

The number of active nightclubs in Ireland has decreased from 522 to 83 over the past 25 years, according to a new study from Give Us The Night.

The report, which is the first comprehensive analysis of the Irish nightclub scene in 15 years, highlighted an 84% reduction in venues since 2000. It attributes this decline to the emergence of free-entry late bars in Ireland, outdated laws, and increased costs.

Additionally, the report indicates that this decline may partly stem from the fact that nightclubs in Ireland are still governed by the 1995 Public Dance Halls Act, which was originally enacted to limit social activities and was influenced by a conservative, anti-youth perspective.

The report was released shortly after the Dublin club Cellar announced its closure. On June 23, the venue shared the news via Instagram, stating that it would be "closing in its current form.”

In Dublin, clubs are allowed to close at 2:30 AM, while the average closing time in other European capitals is 6:30 AM. The study reveals that Ireland has the earliest nightclub curfews in Europe.

As a result, nightclubs in Ireland are typically open for only six to nine hours a week, representing a mere 0.6% of the 14,085 active liquor licenses in the country.

This issue is not exclusive to Ireland; a report published in May by Capital on Tap projected that the UK could see a 49.31% decline in nightlife businesses by 2030.

Despite these concerning statistics, 90% of respondents to Give Us The Night’s survey believe that nightclubs are safe and inclusive social spaces, especially for minority and LGBTQ+ communities. Furthermore, 90% of participants feel that every community should have access to a local nightclub or venue.

Participants expressed strong support for the significance of club culture, with 81% agreeing that nightclubs possess a “timeless appeal.”
