Wuppertal venue U-Club has announced its closure after more than 30 years, with a spokesperson claiming that it’s no longer “economically viable” to run.

The long-standing club, which first opened on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße in the early ‘90s, will close permanently on December 31, 2025, its owners have confirmed.

In a video statement shared on Instagram earlier this week, a club spokesperson explained that “U-Club is no longer operable in a timely manner”.

“Music, community and club culture are losing their homes,” reads a caption. “After over 30 years of club culture in Wuppertal, we have made the hardest decision in our history: the U-Club will close for good at the end of 2025.”

The venue says that while it has consistently “reinvented” itself over three decades, with investments going back into the club to upgrade its lighting and sound technology, it can no longer operate at its current level.

“Technically, the U-Club has never been stronger. Yet the change of time cant be stopped. And at our location, we push hard, insurmountable limits,” they said.

They added that the venue had plans to open up an outdoor area with access to the Wupper river, and to divide the club into “two independent areas” where it could host more intimate events as well as larger-scale ones.

“But these ideas are not feasible at this location,” they said. “Before the doors close forever, we’re celebrating one last time what this place has been – and always will be – for so many of us: Home. A meeting point. Be a part of ones own history.”

The venue will host a series of events paying homage to the nights that “shaped” the club, beginning in September. The final programme of events will be revealed on August 1.

U-Club has also asked past attendees to share their stories, highlights, and favourite moments with the club before its permanent closure later this year.

“We say thank you. For all the nights you filled with life. For every memory created here. For every crowd, every crew, every artist, every organiser, for every single encounter that made this club what it was.”
