Hackney Council Denies License for Silent Disco Over "Noise Complaints"

Hackney Council has denied a record store permission to host a silent disco due to concerns about potential "noise complaints" from neighbors.

According to The Standard, Dalstons Recycle Vinyl was informed by councillors last week that it would not be able to hold an event in a former nursery playground behind the store, citing previous noise complaints against the establishment.

Recycle Vinyl initially sought permission to host its Vinyl Bitch day party on Saturday, for up to 150 attendees from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

This application was denied following a recent event where organizers failed to communicate that DJs would be performing in the outdoor area, resulting in several noise complaints. Recycle Vinyl then proposed to modify the event to a silent disco, where music would only be played through headphones.

“I cant see how 150 people jumping around in someones back garden is not going to cause a public nuisance for neighbors during the day,” PC Hunwick stated. Mr. Smith later suggested limiting attendance to 80 people, eliminating the “entertainment” aspect, and using the former play area solely as a beer garden.

However, both Hackney Council and the Metropolitan Police advised against granting Recycle Vinyl a license, with a representative from the Met asserting that "150 people jumping around in someones garden" would indeed create "a nuisance".

Despite Recycle Vinyls attempt to adjust the event to an 80-capacity gathering with the outdoor area designated as a "beer garden", this proposal was also rejected. Hackney Council determined it would only consider the initial application for the event.

Council documents indicate that neighbors had lodged complaints with Hackney Town Hall during the last event hosted by Recycle Vinyl in the playground, believing "an unlicensed music event was taking place - it was that loud". Police officers subsequently arrived at the party due to these complaints.

Owner Robert Smith expressed regret following the event, claiming it was a "misunderstanding" that led to the store not notifying the licensing committee of its intention to play music.

However, he alleged that "one resident" was primarily responsible for the majority of the complaints, mobilizing local residents to contact the council "five days before the event took place".
