Swedish festival gives fans chance to "give their kidney" for tickets

A Swedish festival is giving fans the opportunity to "give up their kidney" for tickets.

Way Out West Festival will take over Slottsskogen Park in Gothenburg this weekend (August 7-9), with an all-star line-up including Charli xcx, BICEP, Pet Shop Boys, PinkPantheress, Yung Lean & Bladee, and many more.

While the event is sold out, the festival is releasing a handful of three-day passes under its new "Kidney Pass" scheme, asking fans to make good on their claim that they would "literally give up a kidney" to attend by joining the Swedish National Organ Donation Registry.

The tongue-in-cheek initiative will see prospective attendees sign up to the Socialstyrelsen registry, pledging that their organs can be donated after their death; lucky festivalgoers who land one of these passes will be given a special festival wristband that reads: "I gave up a kidney for this ticket".

"This year, tickets to Way Out West sold out earlier than ever. With no tickets left, the FOMO kicks in hard. People start saying they’d give up just about anything to get one," the festival website reads.

"By joining [the donation registry], youre not just saying youd give a kidney for a ticket, you’re showing you truly support organ donation," it continues. "By being willing to donate your organs after your death, you are taking an action could save a life in the future."

Way Out West Festival is no stranger to unique campaigns around its festivals, with last years event hosting the first-ever "IVF stage" where festival sets from the likes of Peggy Gou, Fred again.. and more were broadcast to a test lab of sperm and unfertilised human eggs.

The move, which was dubbed the Future Fan, followed a study that claimed music helps to improve the fertility rate of IVF cycles.
