Criminal investigations underway into Bob Vylan and Kneecaps Glastonbury sets

Avon & Somerset Police have confirmed that they are launching a criminal investigation after reviewing footage of Bob Vylan and Kneecaps performances at Glastonbury 2025.

The two sets took place on Saturday afternoon (June 28) at the festivals West Holts stage, while the BBC didnt broadcast Kneecaps set - pro-Palestine chants during Bob Vylans set prior were broadcast live.

Since then, numerous political leaders have condemned the chants and criticised the BBC for failing to cut the broadcast as Bob Vylan led chants of "death to the IDF".

Yesterday (June 30), Avon and Somerset Police said it had reviewed footage from both performances and have "decided further enquiries are required and a criminal investigation is now being undertaken".

"This has been recorded as a public order incident at this time while our enquiries are at an early stage," the statement continues. "The investigation will be evidence-led and will closely consider all appropriate legislation, including relating to hate crimes".

"We have received a large amount of contact in relation to these events from people across the world and recognise the strength of public feeling. Neighbourhood policing teams are speaking with people in their local communities and key stakeholders to make sure anyone who needs us knows that we are here for them," it adds.

"We hope the work we have carried out, and are continuing to carry out, reassures the public how seriously we are treating Saturday’s events."

Thousands of attendees had gathered at the West Holts stage for both Bob Vylan and Kneecaps back to back performances, with the field having to be closed a full 50 minutes before Kneecap were due to take to the stage.

Many in the crowd used the opportunity to express solidarity with Palestinians and Kneecap, after member Mo Chara was charged with a terror offence after a resurfaced video allegedly showed him brandishing a Hezbollah flag during a 2024 performance in London.

On Sunday (June 29), Glastonbury and Emily Eavis released a statement condemning Bob Vylan and the crowds chant at West Holts, writing: "We are appalled by the statements made from the West Holts stage by Bob Vylan yesterday."

"Their chants very much crossed a line and we are urgently reminding everyone involved in the production of the Festival that there is no place at Glastonbury for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence," the statement adds.

The BBC issued a statement apologising for not pulling the broadcast of Bob Vylans set, writing: "The team were dealing with a live situation but with hindsight we should have pulled the stream during the performance. We regret this did not happen.”

“The BBC respects freedom of expression but stands firmly against incitement to violence," it adds. "The antisemitic sentiments expressed by Bob Vylan were utterly unacceptable and have no place on our airwaves.“

In a statement shared today (July 1), Bob Vylan said they were "not for the death of Jews, Arabs or any other race of group of people. We are for the dismantling of a violent military machine."

"We are being targeted for speaking up. We are not the first. We will not be the last," they continue. "If you care for the sanctity of human life and freedom of speech, we urge you to speak up, too."
