Richie Hawtin produces short film on ‘90s Detroit techno culture

Richie Hawtin has created a new short film that explores the "underground techno culture" of Detroit during the 1990s.

The film, released this week on the video platform NOWNESS, is executive produced by Hawtin, who also contributed to the soundtrack and music composition.

Kids Like Us takes viewers through “the pulsating energy and community of early ‘90s techno culture in Detroit, inspired by Richie Hawtin’s Packard Plant event,” according to a synopsis.

The 9-minute film is directed by Luke Jaden, who “magnifies the community built through the city’s underground techno culture for 35mm,” following a plot about a “group of misfits seeking identity and meaning over a night.”

It also reflects on the early days of Hawtin’s Plastikman alias, which he developed in Detroit in the ‘90s, as well as his Spastik events at the now-closed Packard Plant venue.

Speaking to Resident Advisor, director Luke Jaden shared: “I felt like the underground techno world is so cinematic and that it deserved to be documented in a truthful way through the stories, music, and visuals.”

“We actually shot the film at a techno party in Detroit, and the goal was to make this film feel as real and as authentic as possible to an actual techno party experience," he added.
